How Aviation Recruiters Screen CVs

In aviation recruitment, a CV is often the first point of contact between a candidate and a potential employer. Whether you are applying for a flight crew position, a technical role, or a management opportunity, your CV needs to clearly demonstrate your qualifications, experience, and suitability for the role.

At MHC Aviation, we review hundreds of aviation CVs every month for positions across airlines, leasing companies, MROs, and aviation service providers worldwide. While every role is different, there are several consistent factors recruiters look for when screening candidates.

Understanding how your CV is evaluated can significantly improve your chances of progressing to the next stage of the recruitment process.

The First Screening: Clarity and Relevance

Recruiters typically spend less than a minute reviewing a CV during the first screening. The goal at this stage is to quickly confirm whether the candidate meets the role's essential requirements.

For aviation positions, key details that must be easily visible include current position and employer, total flight hours or relevant technical experience, aircraft type ratings or certifications, licences and regulatory approvals (EASA, FAA, ICAO, etc.), location and right to work as well as availability.

If a recruiter cannot quickly locate this information, the application may be set aside even if the candidate is qualified.

A well-structured CV ensures that critical information can be identified within seconds.

Licences, Ratings, and Compliance

In aviation recruitment, regulatory compliance is non-negotiable. Recruiters must verify that candidates meet the required licensing and certification standards before progressing further in the process.

For flight crew roles, your CV should clearly include licence type (e.g. ATPL, CPL), issuing authority (EASA, FAA, etc.), aircraft type ratings and validity, medical certification and total flight hours and hours by aircraft type

For technical and engineering roles, include relevant certifications (Part-66, A&P, etc.), and approved aircraft types, maintenance authorisations and regulatory approvals and training records.

Providing this information clearly saves time for recruiters and demonstrates professionalism.

Experience That Matches the Role

Recruiters also assess how closely your experience aligns with the role being filled.

This does not necessarily mean candidates must meet every requirement exactly, but the relevance of experience matters. For example:

  • Aircraft types previously flown or maintained
  • Operational environments (commercial airline, ACMI, cargo, charter)
  • Leadership or supervisory responsibilities
  • International operational exposure

Candidates who tailor their CV to highlight relevant experience for the specific role are far more likely to move forward in the recruitment process.

Structure and Professional Presentation

An effective aviation CV should be concise and easy to read, use clear section headings, present experience in chronological order, avoid unnecessary graphics or complex formatting, and ideally not be longer than two pages.

The goal is not to create a visually elaborate document but rather one that allows recruiters and hiring managers to quickly assess your qualifications and experience.

How Recruiters Support the Process

Aviation recruiters do more than simply forward CVs to employers. They also help ensure that candidates are well matched to roles that align with their experience, qualifications, and career goals.

This involves reviewing candidate profiles carefully, understanding airline requirements, and identifying the best possible fit for both parties.

A well-prepared CV allows recruiters to represent candidates more effectively and present their profiles with confidence to potential employers.
